New Telemetry Standards association launches

The Water Industry Telemetry Standards (WITS) Initiative has established a new trade association.

The WITS-DNP3 Protocol Standards Association is due to be launched on 5th january 2011. The new Association will have responsibility for the long term maintenance and management of the new DNP3 Protocol developed under the aegis of the WITS Initiative.

For an annual fee the members of the Association will have rights to nominate and elect members of the committee, gain access to the Application Notes and other technical data, information on standards, specifications etc. Vendor members will be able to submit their products for type approval and inclusion on the website database and use the WITS-DNP3 logo on certified products.

Founded in 2003 with the aim of encouraging inter-company working and partnershipping within the the water industry, the WITS initiative has drawn together a large community of managers and engineers across the UK to help improve the development of telemetry for the future.

WITS has now grown to represent some 31 water and wastewater companies, together with the Environment Agency, throughout the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands. Twenty one WMO members are directly contributing to WITS’ first major project, supported by 6 major water industry vendor investors who currently supply over 80% of UK-based systems and equipment.

The Telemetry Protocol Standard is only available to companies through membership of the Protocol Standards Association (PSA).

Founder telemetry equipment manufacturers members of the WITS project include Schneider Electric, Serck Controls, Technolog and ITT Water & Wastewater.

The current WITS website will become the PSA website – the address will remain unchanged at http://www.ukwits.org/.
