The India-UK Water Centre is inviting applications from Indian and UK water scientists to attend a workshop on Enhancing Freshwater Monitoring through Earth Observation to be held over three days in Stirling, UK 19th – 21st June 2017.
Freshwaters - inland waters, deltas, rivers, lakes, reservoirs etc. - provide the most fundamental of resources for survival and yet maintaining water quality does not always receive the highest priority.
Freshwaters are sensitive to land use change and integrate the impacts of human activity within their catchment, the negative consequences for which are confounded further by climate change.
Access to clean and sustainable water is highlighted as a priority within the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), but monitoring and managing freshwater quality adequately through conventional methodologies retains significant challenges in spatial and temporal coverage and the timely provision of data.
The aims of the workshop will be to bring together scientists to explore the latest generation of Earth Observation (EO) capabilities in the Indian and UK water sectors. The workshop will address topics including:
- Differing practices in India and the UK in monitoring water quality of freshwater;
- Current and near future EO data products available for freshwater monitoring;
- Practical applications to enhance water security, for example to improve water resource quantity and quality for water supply, agriculture and aquaculture;
- Synergies and opportunities to develop and exploit EO capability for effective early warning of freshwaters.
Attendees are invited to propose a 20 minute oral presentation or to present a poster at the Workshop.
The Centre will cover reasonable travel and subsistence expenses for UK and Indian participants attending the workshop. Places are limited to approximately 15 participants from India and 20 from the UK and applicants must be a member of the Open Network of India-UK Water Scientists, which is free to join, to apply.
Application deadline is 20th April 2017 - successful applicants will be notified by 28th April.
