A year after the disastrous Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, WWF is calling for better safeguards to protect the UK’s marine environment.
WWF is urging the Scottish government to abandon new oil drilling and invest in Scotland’s huge renewable energy potential, following the results of the UK Government Energy and Climate Change Committee’s independent review of deepwater drilling in the UK. The Committee’s report and recommendations published in March 2010 raised serious concerns over the safeguards in place to protect the marine environment from the event of an oil spill.
The potential impacts of a hypothetical oil spill off the coast of Scotland are highlighted in an interactive map developed by RSA and WWF to help insurers better understand the risks of this kind of accident. The map shows oil seeping from a damaged passenger ship off the coast of Mull towards fish farms, ports and environmental conservation areas.
With increasing day-to-day demand on seas from fishing, resource extraction, transportation and tourism, oil spills are not the only threat to the marine environment. Leading international insurance group RSA and WWF are working together to improve understanding of these impacts. Last year RSA and WWF jointly published Insurance and the Marine Environment briefing, to provide guidance for business and the insurance industry on managing the challenges and opportunities from environmental change.
