Welsh Assembly launches consultation on private sewers adoption

The Welsh Assembly has launched a new consultation on the new mandatory adoption arrangements and Mandatory Build Standards for new gravity foul sewers and lateral drains.

The Assembly is seeking views on how the water and sewerage undertakers will adopt new sewers and lateral drains connecting to the public sewerage network.

The Water Industry (Schemes for Adoption of Private Sewers) Regulations 2011 came into force on 1 July 2011. Under the new law, existing private sewers and lateral drains became the responsibility of water and sewerage undertakers in Wales and England on 1 October 2011. The Welsh Assembly now wants to implement a mandatory adoption process for all new sewers and lateral drains, supported by mandatory build standards.

The assembly said it would work closely with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to ensure that build standards are consistent, in order to avoid confusion for developers and the water industry across Wales and England.

Deadline for submission of responses is 23 January 2012. Click here to access the consultation documents.
