$7.5m to develop South Australian water facility into international hub

A South Australian water management, research and training facility will receive $7.5 million of funding to redevelop in to an international training hub.

The funding will go towards turning the Loxton Research Centre, located on the banks of the River Murray approximately 240km from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, in to a training hub, delivering information and providing courses on Australia’s irrigation expertise to international delegations and scholars.

The agreement is between the state government and the International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management (ICE WaRM), which will be utilising the Research Centre. ICE WaRM’s Funding comes from the $265 million South Australian River Murray Sustainability Program.

ICE WaRM fill a variety of roles, including tailoring water management education for university students from Australia, Europe, Asia, South America, across a range of Australian institutions to ensure they can specialise in fields not wholly covered by any single university.

Hosting international delegations and exchanges of politicians, scholars, water management experts, emerging leadership, and students from around the world is another responsibility, with delegates from India, a number of African nations, the United States, Iraq and more visiting their facilities.

Visitors are provided information on water policy, technical equipment information, hands-on short courses, field trips and more in an effort to share Australian expertise with key international decision makers.

ICE WaRM will also promote the centre to its strong network of national and international industry contacts.

Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock said that the vision for the facility is a transformation in to a centre of excellence for primary production, business innovation and economic diversification.
