New to the UK is the HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID (DSL) – a trial unit of which has been demonstrated at a large site in the South West of England and is still available.
The DSL is an alternative to primary settlement tanks and is designed for new or existing Sewage Works, which need additional capacity. The DSL takes screened and de-gritted raw sewage and can remove up to 60% of SS and 40% BOD.
The equipment has a footprint 1/10th that of conventional primary tanks - thus allowing low cost works expansion and improved sludge removal volumes for gas generation, without the need for increased secondary capacity and the associated aeration demand. Additional potential benefits include improved “floater” removal and reduced sludge septicity.
The DSL is typically combined with the HUBER Disc Thickener S-DISC - sludge thickener to generate 5-6% sludge for digestion.

HUBER Technology have run a trial DSL in the UK that was sized for P.E.s of 5,000 to 24,000 and have achieved positive results with over 50% SS removal and 35% COD and BOD reduction.

What is the Drum Liquid?
- Fine screen instead of primary clarifier
- Fine screen to reduce SS / BOD concentration in existing plants
Why use the Drum Liquid?
- Overloaded biological treatment
- Primary clarifier either not available or too small
- Increased gas yield for better energy balance WwTW
.....BUT INSUFFICIENT SPACE
