Atkins on recruitment drive to fill hundreds of vacancies

Global design and engineering consultancy Atkins has recruited more than 380 graduates and apprentices to design, engineering and project management positions.

The 300 graduates and 80 apprentices will be based at offices around the country including, Birmingham (26), Bristol (52), London (50), Epsom (62), Warrington (31), Derby (13) and Leeds (13).

The latest intake will start building their careers across a range of disciplines from mechanical, electrical and civil engineering through to surveying and project management, working across a number of markets, including Energy, Transport, Water, Defence and the Built Environment. This year, Atkins’ Water, Ground and Environment division has recruited 66 graduates and 9 apprentices.

Nick Roberts, Atkins’ UK & Europe chief executive officer, said:

“Nurturing the aspirations and development of our future engineers, designers and scientists is crucial to the delivery and sustainability of our infrastructure. We’re committed to developing and implementing ideas that will help move the world forward and enrich lives, and our new graduates and apprentices are vital to achieving this. We want them to have the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and experience which will enable them to move through their careers, while designing and delivering the connected places and spaces of tomorrow.”

The number of young women joining Atkins' graduate development programme this year has continued to grow for a second year in a row, with females making up 30 per cent (91) of the intake this year, a four per cent increase from 2014.

Applications for the graduate development programme 2016 have already opened, with an expected 400 vacancies across the UK business. After a series of improvements to graduate assessments, prospective candidates are now being given the opportunity to submit applications before going back to university. The next summer placement programme will offer around 185 opportunities across the business from October 2015.

The global design, engineering and project management consultancy employs some 18,000 people across the UK, North America, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Europe.  In the UK Atkins is a member of the ‘5% Club’, an industry led campaign, supported by government,  whose member organisations make a public commitment to have at least 5% of their UK workforce on formal graduate and apprenticeship schemes. Atkins’ current proportion is 8.9 per cent.
