Scottish Water has completed work on installing new stacks at Levenmouth Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) as part of on-going work to minimise odours from the site.
The project has resulted in the old 15 metre high stacks being replaced with two 30 metre stacks. The two stacks are now erected and visible on site.
One stack is attached to the sludge drying building. It takes odours from the dryers and dissipates them at a higher altitude than previously, resulting in reduced odours within the community surrounding the works. The other stack dissipates treated odours from the other parts of the WWTW.
Steve Scott, Regional Community Manager, said: “Our investigations since 2012 have identified a number of odour sources for improvement both at Levenmouth Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) and in the surrounding sewerage system.
“A number of significant operational improvements have already taken place, for example chemical dosing to counteract odour sources in the sewerage system. “
“Replacing and raising the height of the stacks represents a major investment in the plant and will result in increased dispersion of the treated odours.”
Construction work has now been completed and commissioning on the first stack was completed at the end of July. The second stack is now operating alongside the first and some minor work is on-going to finalise the project.
Other measures implemented included the installation of an additional temporary odour control unit to minimise odours until the raised stacks were in place.
