Scottish Water’s energy from food plant to come on stream

Horizons, one of Scottish Water’s  stand-alone business,  has taken delivery of its anaerobic digestion plant - the mechanical and electrical works are now underway.

When the food recycling plant comes into operation it will convert 30,000 tonnes of food waste into energy at the Deerdykes facitlity in Cumbernaud. Horizons expects the new facility to come on-stream within the next few months.

The company was set up to enable Scottish Water to capture the significant commercial opportunities from thousands of assets such as treatment works, reservoirs, water towers and nearly 100,000km of water and waste water pipes. The returns generated will be re-invested into the company’s renewables businesses and other related projects.

Horizons projects include:

  • converting waste into compost and in the future, green energy
  • enabling high speed internet cables to be laid in the sewer system
  • generating power from wind turbines on Scottish Water sites going forward
  • ensuring security of water and waste water services for Ministry of Defence sites
