Bristol Water applies to exit retail market

Bristol Water has applied to the Secretary of State at DEFRA for permission to exit the non household retail market in readiness for market opening.

From April 2017, over 1.2 million eligible businesses and other non-household customers in England will be able to choose their supplier of water and wastewater retail services.

The smallest high street shops to the largest public authorities will be able to shop around and choose their retailer or renegotiate their existing deal.

Approval from DEFRA will see Bristol Water separate its wholesale business and transfer all its non household customers to water2business limited, a retailer regulated by Ofwat.

Since 2001 all Bristol Water customers have been jointly billed by Bristol Water and Wessex Water for their water and waste water services. Water2business is acquiring Bristol’s business customers and this company is born out of this successful joint billing venture.

Ben Newby, Customer Services and IT Director at Bristol Water said:

“We are in a unique position of having an established and successful working relationship with water2business and are confident that customers will receive the same standards of service that they are used to. Whilst this change is complex behind the scenes, it will be straightforward and seamless for the customer.”

Bristol Water and Wessex Water will continue to deliver wholesale water and waste water services to business customers - there is no change for domestic customers.

Business accounts will be automatically transferred to water2business so business customers do not  need to do anything, although from 3 April 2017 they will have the option to switch to a different water retailer.
