Anglian Water has submitted an application for a Development Consent Order for its proposed new wastewater treatment plant for Cambridge to the Planning Inspectorate - the relocation project is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP).

The project, which will see the existing wastewater treatment works closed, involves the construction and operation of an integrated waste water treatment centre and sludge treatment plant, transfer tunnels, terminal and intermediate pumping stations, vehicle access, utilities connections, renewable energy generation, ancillary buildings and landscaping.
The relocation project is the first waste water treatment works to seek a Development Consent Order.
The water company said the new facility, as well as being operationally net zero carbon, will be energy neutral.
Solar panels will be installed at the new facility, producing 7MW of clean renewable electricity, approximately 7GW/hrs of electricity over a year. The new facility will also generate biogas which, when processed and exported into the local gas network, will be used to heat the homes of the local community as a renewable fuel source.
Anglian Water’s Phase Three Consultation Summary Report published in January 2023 for Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant Relocation Project states:
“The new facility, as well as being operationally net zero carbon, will be energy neutral. It is designed to adapt to changing social and environmental priorities, increasing resilience to storm flows and flooding and provide a long-term solution to how we best treat waste water for a growing Greater Cambridge population.”
Karen Barclay, Head of Major Infrastructure Planning for Anglian Water said the new facility would become Anglian Water’s flagship waste water treatment plant, and mark a significant step forward in process efficiency and environmental performance.
The Development Consent Order application does not include the demolition of the existing facility or its redevelopment for low carbon housing and employment uses, which will be approved through a separate planning permission.
The application was received by the Planning Inspectorate on 31 January 2023 - the Inspectorate has 28 days to review the application and decide whether or not to accept it. The acceptance decision on the application should therefore be made by Tuesday 28 February 2023.
