The water company is investing £2.8 million in the upgrade to its sewage treatment works (STW) at Carlton and Redmarshall, which will ultimately help to improve water quality in Whitton Beck and downstream at Billingham Beck.

The enhancements to the site will improve the quality of the final treated effluent that is released back into the environment from the site.

The work, which is being carried out by the water company’s partner, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), is due to start mid-September, with completion expected in May 2024.

At nearby Bishopton STW, preparations are also ongoing for an enhancement of that site, to further improve the resilience of the treatment of wastewater from the area and protect local watercourses. The £1.3 million project is set to begin in November, completing in March 2024.

The Bishopton project is also being delivered by MMB.

David Groark, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager for Carlton and Redmarshall STW, said:

“This investment will help make the vital role these sewage treatment works play in the water cycle even better for the environment. By enhancing the treatment process, the water that is returned to these local watercourses is of an even higher quality.
