Anglian Water starts work to install 11,000 water meters

Anglian Water plans to install around 11,000 new water meters in a £450,000 programme in towns and villages around Ipswich in the coming months.

Letters have been sent to thousands of households in and around Ipswich, Felixstowe, Needham Market, Stowmarket and Woodbridge to let customers know about the installation work, which began in late January.

Householders do not have to use the new meters, which are installed free of charge, and can continue to receive an unmeasured bill as before. Those who do decide to switch and try out their new meters will be able to switch back at anytime in the first two years – again free of charge.

However, in areas where meters have already been installed, they have been shown on average to save £100 from a household’s annual water bill, as well as helping to reduce other energy bills.

The meters are being installed as part of the biggest water efficiency drive the East of England has ever seen, with Anglian Water aiming to install 183,000 meters across the region between 2010 and 2015.

Anglian Water aims to have 93 per cent of its customers region-wide choosing to pay for their water using a meter by the end of the decade, but has pledged not to make them compulsory - 76 per cent of Anglian Water customers are already metered.
