Anglian Water is seeking supply chain input for its waste water sludge management services activities – the water company is expecting its total sludge production to increase in AMP8.

The water company currently produces over 150,000 tonnes dry solids (TDS) per annum of sewage sludge at its Water Recycling Centres (WRC) at over 1,100 locations across the operational region.
According to Anglian Water, forecast population growth and increased sludge production as a result of future planned environmental investment via the WINEP programme means its total sludge production will increase. The company is forecasting it will require an increase in additional regional sludge treatment capacity of 23,000 tonnes dry solids per annum by 2030.
The utility says it will therefore have a need for additional sludge treatment capacity in the upcoming 2025-2030 AMP8 investment period.
Currently sludge produced is predominately treated and recycled at ten centralised sludge treatment centres (STC) dispersed across Anglian’s operational area using advanced anaerobic digestion technology, producing a high quality biosolids cake for recycling to agriculture as a soil conditioner under the Nutri-bio brand. The products are certified under the BAS (Biosolids Assurance Scheme).
The water company anticipates that solutions offered will be sited within its geographic operational area or within close proximity, where solutions are offered from neighbouring areas.
Services for treatment of the sludge do not need to be co-located within the existing operations. However, Anglian is highlighting that its sites at Gt Billing (Northampton), Colchester and Whitlingham (Norwich) have the potential available land to be co-located with existing facilities, while other sites across its operational area may also be of interest.
The wastewater treatment processes varies and includes biological and chemical phosphorus removal technologies.
Anglian Water is now seeking solutions for the treatment of sewage sludge and management of products, bi-products and residual solids – and says it is open to considering options that fulfil either the entire - or part of - 23,000TDS need, together with opportunities where sludge can be combined with other feedstocks.
The water company is also interested in options to provide "turn-key" solutions, which include provision of finance and operating services, alongside providing upfront design and build services.
Anglian Water is now inviting suppliers with experience in this area, including details of core skills, services offered and examples of projects / services, to submit expressions of interest by 30 April 2023. Click here to access the PIN documentation.
Following closure of the PIN Anglian will hold a follow up webinar (via MS Teams) for interested parties.
HUBER Technology UK & Ireland are inviting people to register for their March webinar where they will be providing information about HUBER water intake screens for municipal and industrial applications.
