ARCADIS, the world's leading natural and built asset design and consultancy firm, has announced today that together with Swedish company Sweco it is carrying out a feasibility study for two flood barriers in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.
ARCADIS also announced the completion of its acquisitions of Hyder and Callison at the end of last week, further strengthening its position as a leading global natural and built asset design and consultancy.
Gothenburg faces twin dangers of flooding from the sea and from the river Göta which runs through the city. The study will therefore focus on the possibility of installing two flood barriers - one to be positioned sea-side, the other upstream at a fork in the river Göta.
The City of Gothenburg, which is often troubled by flood events, is the client for the study which should be finalized by the end of this year - no financial details were disclosed about the contract.
ARCADIS said the contract award was in part due to its experience in flood barrier design, in particular its work in New Orleans and more recently the work on the flood barrier in Nieuwpoort, Belgium.
to Gert Kroon, who leads the ARCADIS activities in the Netherlands commented:
"There is growing international interest in our water management know-how. We are experiencing an increase in the effects of climate change. Thanks to our extensive water management expertise, we are able to address these challenges."
Last week ARCADIS completed the acquisitions of both Hyder Consulting and Callison. Design and engineering consultancy Hyder Consulting, which employs 4,600 people with activities in the UK, the Middle East, Germany, Asia and Australia, is a leader in infrastructure, water and buildings.
Callison, a 1,000 people high level architectural and interior design consultancy with offices in the United States, China, Europe, Middle East and Mexico, specializes in retail and office design and large mixed use projects.
Geographically, ARCADIS' positions in North America, the UK, Continental Europe, and Emerging Markets have been strengthened by the acquisitions. The acquisitions add more than €500 million in gross revenues - increasing ARCADIS' gross revenues to €3 billion establishing it as the leading global natural and built asset design and consultancy firm with more than 28,000 professionals in its worldwide operations.
