The Green Construction Board (GCB) is marking its first anniversary by unveiling its priorities for 2013 while celebrating news that more than half the actions in the Government’s Low Carbon Construction Action Plan have now been completed.
Business Minister Michael Fallon and Skanska UK President and Chief Executive Mike Putnam, Co-Chairs of the Board, outlined the Board’s successes over the last 12 months and set out the group’s priorities for the year ahead at an event in Westminster yesterday.
The Board’s immediate efforts are focused on developing a Low Carbon Routemap for the built environment, due to be published in the spring. This will set out key milestones and interventions in the delivery of an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050.
Business Minister Michael Fallon said: “Our goal is clear; to set a course for industry that will help reduce its overall carbon emissions while helping construction and built environment businesses to capitalise on low carbon growth opportunities.
“The Green Construction Board is a good example of how the Government’s industrial strategy is bringing together both Government and industry leaders to stimulate growth and address real issues such as carbon emissions.”
Mike Putnam said: “At a challenging time for the construction industry, the green agenda provides opportunities for growth - for the industry as well as the UK economy.
“The Green Construction Board has helped to establish a shared vision for green growth and is a good example of what government and industry can achieve when we work together. One year on, we can be confident we are moving in the right direction.”
Made up of 160 representatives from both Government and industry, the GCB has played a key role in ensuring that 84 of 162 actions in the Low Carbon Construction Plan have been completed since November 2011.
Other achievements include:
• Bringing industry and Government together in seven working groups that are delivering a comprehensive programme of activity
• Developing an interactive tool which illustrates, through a series of case studies, that reducing carbon can go hand-in-hand with reducing cost
• Issuing a call for evidence to create a ‘knowledge database’ for low carbon research and development.
