Parts of central London were again under water last night after 1.5 inches of torrential rain fell on the capital during less that 24 hours, flooding tube stations, homes and roads.
Vehicles and buses became stranded and parts of the North Circular, the A12 and and the Blackwell Tunnel were among many of the city’s roads closed by the flooding.
Widespread press coverage shows pictures of numerous locations under water, including Pudding Mill Lane DLR station where torrents of water were seen swirling around the ticket barriers.
Barts Hospital, London’s largest hospital trust, declared a major incident after its Whipps Cross and Newham Hospital were flooded and asked patients to find alternative hospitals where possible.
The Environment Agency still has a number of flood warnings in place, including the risk of flooding which remains for properties and roads close to the Beverley Brook in Motspur Park and West Barnes and flood alerts for the Beverley Brook area in Merton, Sutton, Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames and Wandsworth.
Other flood alerts currently in place include the Ravensbourne area in the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich and Croydon, the Lower River Lee from Hoddesdon to Canning Town, the River Wandle area in the London Boroughs of Wandsworth, Merton, Lambeth, Croydon and Sutton and Yeading Brooks in London Boroughs of Harrow and Hillingdon
This is the second time London has been hit by flash flooding caused by heavy rain within the space of a month.
