Welsh Water has installed an innovative new water management system into the Pontsticill reservoir to improve the overall quality of the water.
By using large stirrers (approximately 5 metres in diameter) to circulate the water in the reservoir, the system will improve the quality of the raw water before it enters the works for full treatment.
The new installation is part of Welsh Water’s £1.5 million upgrade of its Pontsticill Water Treatment Works.
Yesterday Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney Assembly Member, Huw Lewis saw the system in operation at first hand on a visit to the treatment works.
Welsh Water’s Capital Delivery Manager for South East Wales, Roy Samuel said:
“We were delighted to welcome Mr Lewis to Pontsticill to show him the investment we have made in the water management system. This is the first time that Welsh Water has used a water management system of this type and it will ensure customers in the area continue to receive a top quality supply of drinking water long into the future.”
The Pontsticill reservoir is located in the Brecon Beacons, north of Merthyr Tydfil and was completed in 1927. It holds over 15 billion litres of water – equivalent to 6,000 Olympic sized swimming pools - and serves over 106,000 customers in the Merthyr area and other parts of the south Wales valleys.
