J Murphy & Sons wins United Utilities Haweswater Aqueduct contract

Land and Marine, a subsidiary of J Murphy & Sons, has won the design and construction works contract for the refurbishment of the Haweswater Aqueduct tunnels and conduits.

Murphy, the only company to bid for the contract, carried out a £22 million structural analysis survey of the tunnel sections of the Haweswater aqueduct in 2013 ahead of the upgrade work.

Draining and shutting down the Haweswater aqueduct for the first time in its history took a decade to plan and involved more than 400 workers delivering 45 separate projects to ensure the network of supporting treatment works could take the strain while Haweswater was offline.

The inspection outage provided valuable structural information which helped define the strategy for the road ahead for the aqueduct. Two more longer duration outages are now planned for the month of October in both 2015 and 2016 when the emphasis of the next two outages will move from inspections to investigations and repairs. A major task during the next outages is to complete more focused and detail investigations on the area of concern discovered in the first outage inspections.

The water company has also awarded a separate contract for the supply of large diameter pipes for marine outfalls at Anchorsholme and Harrowside in the Blackpool area of Lancashire to Norwegian firm Pipelife Norge AS. The company was the only company to bid for the three year contract, which ends on 31st December 2017 and is worth between £6.5 million to £24 million.
